Options when a traumatic brain injury changes your life

Motor vehicle accidents, workplace accidents and accidents caused by defective products are some of the most common events that cause serious injuries for Louisiana residents. Of the potential serious injuries a person might suffer in one of these types of events, a “TBI”—traumatic brain injury—can result in the most drastic changes to a person’s lifestyle.

While some TBIs might be labeled as “mild” or even “moderate,” the fact is that for the injured victim, there is nothing small about a brain injury that alters a previously established way of life. “Mild” TBIs, for example, can result in debilitating headaches, memory problems or sensitivity to sounds and light. “Moderate” TBIs obviously come with escalated symptoms from there, which might include slurred speech, confusion and even seizures. And, of course, there are “severe” TBIs that, among other things, might leave injured victims in a coma.

Legal options

So, what are your options if you have suffered a life-changing TBI? Well, if the injury was caused by another party’s recklessness or negligence, you may be able to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Such a lawsuit could result in the recovery of financial compensation that could, in many ways, help restore your life to something like it was before the injury.

Proving personal injury cases, however, is a burden that the “plaintiff” must bear. In general, injured victims must show that it is more likely than not that the “defendant” bears the blame for the injury that occurred. If you have suffered this type of serious injury, be sure to get a full evaluation of the potential validity of your legal claim.
